Welcome to the Township of Lutsen

In the 1880's a Swedish immigrant, Charles A Nelson, gained U.S. citizenship status and went to find a place to homestead  from which to pursue fishing as a means to support his family. In the mid 1880's he landed and later took possession of the area at the base of the Poplar River. Chippewa families arriving as early as the 1800's[Gesick, Blue Sky, Shingibbis, Beargrease, Le Sage and others] settled in the area by mid 1850's. The Gesick family lived near the mouth of the Poplar as well.  Working together was important for survival for this way of life. The Chippewa shared vital hunting and gathering knowledge and skills and Nelson shared tools and work. From a humble beginning, Lutsen became a spot to visit and experience the outdoors. Later the town center moved which became a village with a store, a post office, and a  place for other settlers to get together. Lutsen is named after a battle in which a Nelson ancestor fought for King Gustav of Sweden. And today, Lutsen Township is a place where people come to meet. From early fishing families, loggers, and traders to the thousands of yearly guests that come to our township these days we welcome everyone to share and enjoy the natural beauty that is Lutsen Township.  Within this website you will find information about our local government, contact info for our elected officials as well as the ability to book our community room for your special events or meetings. From our township to you and your family, enjoy your stay!
